Singing Time Ties

On Father's Day (yes, I know that was a while ago) my friend asked me to substitute for her as the Primary chorister.  I wasn't too worried, I knew the songs from filling in as the pianist for several months at the beginning of the year.

As I was falling asleep on Saturday night I had a thought that I should prepare something kind of fun, just in case the plan I was told did not happen.  I woke up the next morning and while I got ready I thought of a variety of options.

As it turned out, the plan did change and I luckily had something ready.

I have been collecting these scraps of paper from work, with the intention of cutting them up to make little journals and books.  I took several of these strips, cut the ends to a point and then colored the ends like ties - it being Father's day.  On the other end I wrote the name of a song or simply "Your choice."  I then took a piece of poster board I had tucked in the back of the closet and cut slits for each of the "ties".

The ends of the "ties" were curled up on the inside. (The other side of the poster board was orange.)

Some "ties" were fat, some were thin.  And they were not all the same length, so as the child pulled the tie, some took quite a while to get to the end.  The kids loved it.

If I were to do this again I would rather use foam board, as the poster board did not stand up very well. I thought you could also use ribbon with papers on the end, or just a number that referred to a list of choices.

I had just finished taking these pictures when Patrick came home from his morning meetings.  As most of all this thinking and planning had taken place that morning he did not know it was for singing time and thought it was a Father's day surprise for him.  This would be a cute way to do "coupons" for Father's day...maybe next year.
