One step at a time...

Ok... so... some of what we have here today was supposed to be ready for last week's post. But, life happened and the first bit of it is ready for today.

Lisa is pressing on with her dissertation and seems to have finally gotten a committee together and has even started educating them on what the heck she's doing. If she hasn't mentioned it already she's also recently been awarded a fairly prestigious internship for one of her conferences this year. That means she's going to be working hard, and that we will be there for longer than we first planned. Buuttt the hotel gets paid for, the registration fee gets paid for, and she gets a stipend for food and travel and such. It also means that she's becoming more of an insider for another (and larger this time!) organization that she really wants to be active with. (What do I say? Well... Vegas Baby!!! (Actually it may not be that exciting really... writing stuff...)).

On my side of the house Johnson Farm is one step closer to being published on schedule. For those keeping score that will be my second book of the year and the first novel of a series. The second novel of the series is currently planned as this years NANOWRIMO project (with books three and four to come...). I'll be talking more about this in upcoming posts...

For today's post... I'm also started on next years first book, another craft book. This one will teach about how to make and use your own 'beach' glass. It's planned as an intermediate level craft book (a step up from the last one). I am also releasing some videos related to this book (and a couple more for the last one (and at least one for the novel...). As of tonight I actually have the first of those videos out the door!

Yes, it's simple. But it's also another one on the resume (and hopefully the first item out for my third book!). I actually have had a couple people ready to jump ship to my team just from filming this one...

Three more videos are planned at this time (with the material for one of them on my desk already). So tune in in the near future and hopefully I can show you why 'hitting the bottle' might not mean what you think it means!

In the other side of life Lisa is still the ward music coordinator and keeping those singers singing and players playing.

As for myself I'm still ward clerk. Once again I have two assistants who are doing fairly well and once again there are thoughts of "when I get them trained up I can move on to something else". Of course last time I thought that they reorganized the stake and I lost all my trainees to another ward!

And, once again I am working on cleaning up the ward list. This requires calling, emailing, or otherwise contacting people who want to know who I am before they will tell me anything...

And once again one of my favorite bands has provide timely theme music for the project...

So, thank you to INSOC for the timely video! (Yes I do actually play this one while I'm working on ward list stuff!!!)

That's it for this one. See you in two...

There and back again... again!

Last week Lisa told the tale of our trip to California. Normally we love going on trips and find them energizing and relaxing in interesting ways, but not that trip...

There were a lot of things going on and a lot to get done after we got home.

In the last week we officially got my first book of the year out (after having to explain to the publisher that captions actually need to be with the pictures and that the captions didn't have to be repeated more than once). I started writing text for my latest book project (due out in 2017). Lisa got chapter 1 of her dissertation to her advisor....

And then there were the things that weren't writing related. Two Sundays ago (the one before Mothers
Day) Lisa got her new choir director and got the choir to meet for the first time in our new ward (and the stake wants them to sing in stake conference next month...). I had a bunch of clerks office stuff to do including pushing to get my new membership clerk (who knows when that is going to happen...) and explaining to someone who really should have known better that as a clerk I do not in fact have the authority to perform marriages for the dead (talk about a looong story). And a whole series of other adventures better left to another time and place.

Somewhere in all of this I mentioned to Lisa that I didn't think the typical ward Mother's Day thing was going to be very good for either one of us at the moment. Lisa quickly found that with some club points we could get a really good price at a nice hotel in Salt Lake.

And then this happened...

Video courtesy of PandoricaGallifrey ...

In all seriousness we did get away for the weekend, and it really was what we needed. We got the relaxation and stress relief we didn't get on the last trip. Speaking of that stress relief...

I know it's a weird Mother's Day activity but we had a good time "bustin' caps" at a local shooting range. Lisa did pretty good for her first time with a pistol. No, the grouping on my target in the picture ain't the best, but considering it was a range gun not mine and this was my first clip with it... I'm not complaining. They got better after that.

Later in the day we went to a really good Brazilian steak house for a nice dinner.

I actually woke up both nights of the trip with ideas about the new book. So, Lisa kindly ignored a lot of rambling on my part...

So my tip to everyone is... If you really need to get a way for a day or two, find a way to do it once in a while...

It really helps.

Here are a few other lessons learned on this trip

1: Fancy hotel manager types get worried when they see a guy with crazy hair wandering into their hotel restaurant....

2: Those same managers get really embarrassed and defensive on the second day of the trip, when they come up to you in the hotel restaurant; see that you're writing in a notebook; and then read your t-shirt that says "Please don't annoy the writer he may put you in a book and kill you" (Thanks to Lisa's mom, Marisa, and company)... Yeah, the service got a lot better after that...

3: Lisa really prefers revolvers to semi automatics. Revolvers don't throw hot brass at you...

4: There is absolutely no point in me not taking a notebook into a restaurant... I only end up writing on the napkins!

Well, that's it for today...
Until next time...

Let's hope this year is calmer than... ok... maybe not!

Well, Christmas went well around the Kidder household, and relatively calmly since it was just the two of us. Significantly we made it through our first post diabetes diagnosis Christmas without too much trouble over the yummy food (though Lisa is basically having to finish a box of See's candy by herself...).

And then the new year started, and was pretty calm until about 10:00 AM on January first!

Words 'n junk...

This month I'm editing that novel Johnson Farm that I started as a NANOWRIMO project in November and I started on the first. So far the revisions are pretty good! There is one three line change and a couple of paragraph re-formats but those are the biggest items in the first 50 pages. I'm moving at about double the pace I was writing at, so the first editing pass should be done in about two weeks. The goal is to have the book ready for people to read by the end of February. Then in March I have special plans for the book that I will be officially announcing in a couple of weeks (if the events of this month haven't killed me by then...)

Also in March I will be doing final edits for my chainmaille book that's do to be published in April... I am also cranking away on the videos, but not as fast as I would like... Still I have one that should be up on the YouTube channel in a couple of weeks at the latest.

Since Lisa's dissertation has a lot to do with her work she's been doing less writing and more 'thinky stuff' over the break. Note: you don't really understand the value or real nature of 'thinky stuff' until you've done serious writing (and a fair amount of it). But she's moving forward again. She has also been doing A LOT of knitting. Don't worry no sheep were actually harmed in her efforts but a few  really resent the bad haircuts ;-)

The rest of the story...

That gets us up to January 3rd which was supposed to be a 'day of rest'. Well for Lisa it was, she was home sick... For me it was the day that they informed the members of the stake that all the ward boundaries are being redrawn... There's more to it, but I officially don't know about anything else until the official meeting next week...

I say officially because, lets face it, I've been a ward clerk for the better part of the last 15 years and a data analysis guy for longer than that... If I can't put together a thing or two by myself then there is a problem...

The first hint was at the beginning of December when they announced that all the wards were to have all the end of quarter and end of year stuff done by January 3rd... (we usually have at least until the 15th for a lot of it...

So to quote Apocalypse Now..."I wanted a mission, and for my sins they gave me one." This is quite probably the only process I've never had to deal with as a clerk. This is happening fast and I'm fairly close to the center of it.

Yes, the bishop has more responsibility. But, I'm the one that gets to make sure that all the records, data, ordinances/ordinations/callings, and related stuff get moved; happen; get recorded; or whatever else is necessary (and that it's all done by the book...). On the bright side, I'm sure that I won't get stuck with a calling I don't want in the next few months; and at least I'm not the executive secretary ("I have two phones and neither one will stop ringing!!!").

That's about it for this one...
Till next time...
This just seems like the thought to end on...

Running Away...

So, after some very crazy weeks, and the upcoming end of the semester, we needed a break.  (I think we also get antsy as spring comes around.  The uncertainty of the weather in the winter makes traveling a bit more anxiety producing.)

So, from our travels we brought back...
  • German chocolate
  • French pastries
  • Chinese sauces and mixes
  • A baseball grenade (empty)
  • Some zippers
  • Pre-polish grit for the tumbler
  • Some rocks - just two little ones for Lisa's office collection
  • Little boxes
  • New pants for Patrick
I find it great that we can travel 2 1/2 hours away and have such an international experience!

We did skip the Brazilian BBQ and the Belgian frites and waffles this time around, but the point was to step away from work and re-orient ourselves.  The German deli  - Seigfreid's Deli - had priorities this time around, and we did breakfast at Les Madeleines.  I had the best English muffin ever! Homemade really does make a difference.  We, of course, brought home some of the pastries - you just can't get enough of the good stuff here!

We ended up in a great little hotel suite, with a good bed - which helped us both to sleep better than either of us had for a while.

With a lazy Friday, semi-wandering around Salt Lake it gave us much needed time to talk.  Although, work - both teaching and writing filtered into the conversation, that is nothing unusual for us.  At dinner Thursday night, we think the table next to us changed their conversation as an attempt to counter our pretty heady and theoretical conversation.

Throughout the weekend we discussed the lesson I taught on Sunday, (which I think went really well) a talk from the October General Conference by Sister Carol F. McConkie entitled Live according to the Words of the Prophets.  I love that we can talk about everything - especially scripture and gospel topics.

Next spring we are going to plan to go to the Winter Solstice Writing Retreat (See Solstice Writer Retreat Blog and High Valley Arts Website).

Sorry, no pictures this week, perhaps next week.

But his girlfriend is the blond...

Ok, last week Lisa said I was going to talk about one of my 'cool' projects this week, and I am! (several actually) But, I'm probably not going to show you the one she was talking about. Why? Sewing machines... Apparently 1) they're more complicated than they look; 2) in spite of my skills in a number of areas I'm not really all that good at sewing; and 3) no matter how many cool settings your machine might have there is no sewing machine I'm aware of with a 16 gauge 1/4 inch European four in one setting!

I've got two chain mail projects that will be ready to put up soon. The metal part is done, but both require a fabric inner section that I haven't quite got worked out yet... Hopefully I'll have them (or at least one) worked out before the next time I post. I would have had one ready but the sewing part is taking longer than I planned (like I said sewing ain't really my specialty (I'm more of the cut/burn/explode persuasion...))

Both of these are classified as serious projects because they are my own developments and I'm planning on writing up and selling instructions for them both (both are simpler than the dreaded Christmas owls (sorry about that!))

Lisa's book chapter is ready to go. As of last I knew she just had to sign the permission to print form, scan it and send it in. But, as of last I knew she hasn't done that yet... So, Lisa, no publication party for you! (at least until you get the forms filled out and sent in)

On one level my novella is finished. On another level it's in that 'sensitive' phase of editing (that would be the one where someone who isn't me is reading it over and giving me notes on it). On the one hand I really hate this part. On the other hand this part, and the editing that follows, makes the story better and stronger.

In this case the first 'note' to come out of it is that I need to improve/clarify the voice for one of my characters...

In a weirdly related note...I do listen to music while I'm editing and in some cases writing. When I put on Youtube just before I started writing this post this is the first video that came up...

Now the question is: Is Rory standing in for me or my character?

In all seriousness I had some ideas how to fix things for the character and watching this really did cement what I need to do for him. This is important because in addition to the novella I'm working on a novel that has many of the same characters (related but different story) and the character in question moves into a more central roll in the novel.

Also in this area my other blog Words Mean Stuff will be up and running again this week (and this time I mean it!!!)

Well, that's about it for this week. (well except for cooking news (but that's not quite ready yet either...).

Lisa should be back next week (hopefully with a book chapter permission form sent in...) and I will be back in two (with either: pictures of a finished chain mail project or two, or pictures of Lisa's sewing machine on fire!)

Apparently...

Ok, so, two Sundays ago I broke one of my rules and actually agreed to do the spiritual thought for ward council this coming Sunday. Last Sunday they decide to put a rotation system in place for the spiritual thought in Bishopric meeting, resulting in me giving the spiritual thought for that meeting next Sunday (That's two meetings and two thoughts...).  They also specifically ask me to help with the Friends of Scouting drive this Thursday. I also got word on some developments for my clerks office that I've been waiting for...

Then, while innocently taking an afternoon nap, I get a call from the bishop asking Lisa and I to speak in sacrament meeting next Sunday...

... so apparently it is all about me ;) (well, and sometimes Lisa :-) )

In other news... Friday was the much dreaded 'change the tumbler day' in Goblin Town (yes, for those of you who haven't heard that's what I named the basement portion of the workshop (anyone having a problem with it can take it up with the goblins...))

And...

This happened... (we are looking at the white circle around the center)

That is actually polish compound that managed to sneak around the inner rubber lining, the inner metal lid, the steel washer and the nut to make a nice ring around the outside. Never seen this before with my tumbler. So I wonder what happened.

I pull the rig apart and...

It was gas! Almost every set of instructions for tumbling rocks mentions burping the tumbler occasionally, this is actually the first time I've ever really needed to.

On analysis it could have been much worse (I've heard stories of lids blowing off), but I do have to do some forensic rockhounding and figure out what happened.

...so apparently even in the workshop things can get a little bit gassy :(

In other other news...

Lisa's dissertation is continuing. We're waiting to hear about a conference in Washington State. And, Lisa's article that was published has been cited in other published works!!! (kinda major it means her work is being recognized professionally (but I'll encourage her to write about that next week))

... So apparently I need to step up my game and start cranking out the books!

I'm really working on that last one... this last week I was so wrapped up in writing/rewriting the climax for this novella I'm working on that not only did I loose track of time but they sent a manager out to check on me... (Well that's what I get for writing at Carl's Jr... (On the other hand... hey, free refills on diet Dr Pepper (... so apparently my writing is motivated/fueled by soda pop (is any one surprised? (no, seriously is anyone really surprised by that one?))))).

Well, apparently that's it for this week! Hopefully Lisa  gets to write next week, and I'll be back in two with a whole new box of dots and parentheses :-)

Why does it never go smooth?

Well to  answer my own question sometimes it does go smooth. Those are the times I suspect I'm walking into an ambush...

Once again working on the house. Today I got to play locksmith and replace the handle mechanism on the screen door. Part of the mechanism managed to break so that there was no way to open it from the outside and opening it from the inside was a bit of a trick. But now we have a brand new handle and lock set and a screen door that actually locks! Definitely will help with air flow this spring... and I got to play outside with metal objects in freezing temps... bonus!

The writing continues...
Making progress on my novella, and developing a minor level of fame (notoriety?) doing it... mostly among the people who work at the Carls Jr that's one of my favorite writing spots (diet Dr Pepper on tap... Just wish they hadn't taken the chili fries off the menu (just today...  :(    ). My biggest (according to my interest) non fiction project is going to take longer than I thought, but I want it to be GOOD! (more about that latter).

Anticipating Lisa will be presenting at another conference this spring (up in Washington state this time...) and she is continuing to work on her Dissertation.

This weekend is our stake conference and the stake president has asked our ward to provide the choir for the adult section Saturday night. So, Lisa will be playing piano in stake conference. As for me... I wish I knew whose butt I burned...I'm going to be talking in the clerk training for the leadership meeting. On the one hand it's pretty cool. On the other hand... why me? On the other other hand considering my big favorite non fiction project is a book on record keeping it makes sense!!!

I'm also working on the never ending project of fixing our ward list, training new leaders, and generally annoying cocky people who assume they must know more than I do because I'm 'just the clerk'.

Relating to a couple of those things... a chance for you guys to rant! If you have had questions/ideas/frustrations about records or record keeping... or good or bad experiences being or dealing with clerks or secretaries in your church organizations I'd love to hear about them! Most of the people who read this know how to get a message to Lisa or myself, so if you don't want to post it as a comment then email us... as with many of my projects this is about helping people to learn, grow and get better.

Well, that's it for today.

Till next time...
remember...
My mind does not wander...
It just goes on self guided voyages of discovery!
